Using Email
What is email?
Electronic mail is a standarized way of communicating via the Internet. Email
works in a similar way to postal mail. With email you can send and receive mail
electronically in a matter of minutes. And just like postal mail you can send
attachments such as pictures, documents, and programs.
As an Infinet user, you automatically have an email address. This address will
be [YourUserID]@infinet.net. This is the address that other people type to send
email to you. If you wish to send email to other people you will need their
email address. 
Does it cost extra to use email?
No. Email is included in your basic dial-up package. This means you can send
and receive email as often as you like to anyone in the world. On the Internet
there is no such thing as long distance, so there are no charges for sending long
distances.
How can I find another person's email
address?
It is difficult to find email addresses. The best way is to actually ask the
person what their email address is. If this is not possible you can check a number
of email directories. Be aware however that these directories are very incomplete.
This is because it is up to the indivual to register their email address and other
personal information with the directory registrar. The following directories allow
searches by email address.
Note: If the person you are trying to locate has a web site, or their company
has a web site, try going to that site and look for a contact page. Email addresses
are often available on web sites.
Can I have more than one email address?
Yes. You may have as many email addresses as you like. If you want additional
email addresses from Infinet there will be a fee of $5 (CAN) per month. You might
want to try some of the free web based email addresses. Companies such as Hotmail
and Yahoo Mail can
offer free basic email services. These companies are able to offer free services
from the advertising revenues generated by their web sites.
My friends Infinet account has a different
ending than mine.
Infinet has an affiliated network of computer stores. Many stores have their
own domain. Infinet assigns email addresses based on the store where the computer
was purchased. Any Infinet customer can use [username]@infinet.net as an email
address. In fact users are able to use both email addresses at the same time without
changing any settings their mail program.
If this occurs simply redial the Internet.
Setting up email programs
There are many email programs available to use. In order to get them working
you will have to enter some information into the settings. Infinet users will
have had their information entered by the store where they purchased the computer,
or an Infinet support technician.

Working with email programs
Although there are many email programs available to use, they all have common
features.
New Message/Compose Every email program allows you to create new mail
messages. You will be prompted for an address to mail to, any carbon copies (CC)
and a subject.
Get messages/Send and Receive Every mail program will have a tool which
allows you to receive messages. You must be connected to the Internet in order
to receive mail.
Mailboxes Any mail that is sent in to you will be automatically placed
into the Inbox. Any mail that you have composed will be placed into your Outbox
- which will end up in you Sent Mail/Items box once you have decided to send them.
Any mail in the Sent Items box has been sent. There is also a Trash folder with
most email programs. Any incoming mail that you read and delete will be stored
in the trash folder. This mail will only truly be deleted when you empty your
trash folder.
Email functionality
Many email programs have advanced features. Most new email programs allow you
to send email in .HTML format. This gives your email all the functionality of
a web site. You can include pictures, forms, tables, colors, font attributes,
sound, etc... However, the person receiving your mail must have an .HTML capable
email client.
Other advanced features include mail filters and mail encryption. If your email
program is not capable ot these features try downloading a newer version from
the Infinet
download site.
